Pat Dryburgh

In collaboration with Make IT Solutions, I had the privilege of working with the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board (YESAB) to redesign and develop the front-end of their Online Registry, a critical platform for submitting project proposals, tracking assessments, and accessing related documents for all development projects in the Yukon.

Project Kickoff: Design Sprint

The project began with a one-week Design Sprint, which I facilitated on-site in Whitehorse, YK, alongside key stakeholders from YESAB. This intensive workshop focused on understanding the challenges users faced with the existing registry, brainstorming potential solutions, and prototyping new ideas. By the end of the week, we had developed a clear vision for the registry’s redesign, including wireframes and a roadmap for development.

Design Approach

The design emphasized simplicity and clarity, inspired by the insights gathered during the Design Sprint. Key improvements over the previous system included:

  • A streamlined navigation system to help users quickly find relevant information.
  • A responsive layout optimized for all devices, ensuring usability across desktops, tablets, and smartphones.
  • A large, navigable map interface to display all of the projects under assessment.
  • Consistent visual elements, such as typography and color schemes, that reflected YESAB’s professional branding.

Front-End Development

The front-end was built using React, enabling the creation of a dynamic, efficient, and scalable user interface. Key development highlights included:

  • Responsive design: Ensuring a seamless experience across different screen sizes.
  • Interactive features: Including real-time search, dynamic forms, and interactive data displays to enhance user engagement.
  • Accessibility-first approach: Meeting WCAG standards to ensure inclusivity for all users.

Results

The redesigned YESAB Online Registry was met with enthusiastic feedback from users, project proponents, and stakeholders who noted significant improvements in usability and accessibility. The platform now empowers YESAB to better support environmental and socio-economic assessments by offering a modern, intuitive, and reliable tool.

This collaboration with Make IT Solutions and YESAB demonstrated the power of human-centered design and modern development practices in delivering impactful solutions.
